Getting Driving Lessons

You are spending hard earned money on driving lessons, so it’s important to take your time when choosing a qualified driving instructor or driving school in Carlisle, and one that you feel very at ease with.

The Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in the UK approves ALL driving instructors. Only DVSA Approved Driving Instructors also referred to as (ADIs) or DVSA licensed instructors under training are allowed to charge you for professional driving instruction.

Instructor DSA approved?

It is extremely important to check the badge displayed in the driving instructor’s car windscreen. A green octagonal badge shows the instructor is fully qualified and an Advanced Driving Instructor ( ADI). A pink triangular badge shows the instructor is not yet fully qualified, but like you they are training and allowed to charge for lessons.

ADIs and DVSA licensed driving instructors under training are also now checked to see if they have a criminal record with the CRB.

Choosing a driving instructor?

Most Driving Instructors work by themselves, while others are part of a bigger driving school. Whatever type of driving instructor you decide to go with, make sure you talk to the instructor directly and not a salesman so to make sure you like and feel comfortable with them.

At Allen Brown Driving School you will always speak directly with the Instructor who will be taking you for driving lessons. They will always be polite, understanding and give you all the information you need to make a uniformed decision.

Driving Instructor Check List

Below are some things to consider when choosing the best driving instructor for you.

  • Do they teach in your local area? near your home, work or college.
  • Is the driving instructor available at times to suit you? after work and weekends.
  • Do they have dual controls fitted?  Learner drivers may find it easier to learn with a smaller car.
  • How long has the instructor been teaching learner drivers?
  • Does the driving instructor pick-up other students during a lesson?
  • Do you know anyone else who has used the driving school or driving instructor?
  • How much does the driving instructor charge (remember cheapest isn’t always best)
  • How long does the driving lesson last? Some instructors will want to offer two-hour lessons.
  • Can you try an initial lesson at a discount.
  • Does the driving instructor offer a discount for block bookings?
  • What is the driving instructor’s policy if you cancel a driving lesson?

You can find more DVSA information on choosing a driving instructor here www.gov.uk/find-driving-schools-and-lessons.

Private Driving Lessons

Practice always makes perfect, so when your driving instructor thinks you are ready, why not get more practice with family members or a friend.

Please Note:- Learners who are driving a car must hold a valid provisional licence. They must be supervised by someone at least 21 years old who holds a full driving licence and has held one for at least three years.

You will need insurance to drive a vehicle. No car insurance? NO DRIVING. It is a criminal offence to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle without car insurance so don’t leave home without it. If someone teaching you states you are insured to drive then it is your responsibility to check!

You can now have an Insurance policy were you can drive almost any car, when you need it, from as short as a week.
Drive your parents, grandparents, friends or relatives car without any risk to their insurance. Just take out a policy for each vehicle when you need it. More Information

It’s important to plan practice sessions. Decide where you want to go and what you are going to do before setting out on the driving lesson. Take some care in selecting a suitable area. A large deserted car park is ideal for the initial sessions because it allows the beginner to concentrate fully on the feel of the controls and the response of the car.

For the initial road lessons please find the quietest roads possible. Your family/friend will learn the correct road and traffic procedures from the professional instructor. Your job will be to provide good feedback while he practices these procedures.

Accurate lane driving and positioning for turns, good signal timing, and good road sense are the basic ingredients for passing the government road test. These will be learned more effectively by driving around the block with somebody who provides good feedback than by hours of random driving on dual carriage ways or streets. On the other hand, a co-driver who allows the novice driver to get away with faults or who provides poor feedback may hold back the learning process considerably.
